"Closure of liquor shops will ensure additional money to people”
CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has urged the government to take the first step towards total prohibition by reducing the number of liquor shops in the State.
The decision to close the shops in a particular area should be taken in consultation with the locals, he said.
In a statement here, Dr. Ramadoss ridiculed the government’s argument that introduction of prohibition would lead to free flow of illicit arrack, and to hooch deaths. On the other hand, he said, deaths due to illicit liquor were more when there was no prohibition. Closure of liquor shops, he said, would ensure additional money to people. With it, they could buy more commodities, which would bring additional revenue to the government.
Dr. Ramadoss said it was unfortunate that the votaries of prohibition were ridiculed by people who argued that total prohibition in Tamil Nadu alone was not possible. If there was a will there would be a way, he said.
