Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has finalised the designs for the user-friendly uniforms for its sanitary workers.

The designs were made by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Corporation officials said orders for the cloth have been placed with Co-optex.

Instead of a regular shirt collar, the NIFT has recommended a ‘mandarin’ collar that would allow sweat to easily evaporate. The full-length trousers could be shortened, by folding it and fastening it with Velcro straps. Saris and salwar-kurta sets in small paisley prints have been chosen for women workers.

Mayor M. Subramanian on Monday announced that 2,025 sanitary workers, who were now daily wage employees, would be given permanent jobs.

The decision was the Corporation’s gift to the staff to celebrate Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s birthday, he said.

The Mayor interacted with representatives of Corporation employees’ unions on Tuesday. He said that Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin would give the appointment orders to the regularised staff. Also, 153 Corporation drivers, who had an accident-free record, would be presented watches.
