Chennai: The Chennai Corporation has warned of action against fruit vendors at the Koyambedu wholesale market who resort to artificial ripening of mangoes.

On Tuesday, about 1,200 kg of artificially-ripened mangoes were destroyed by health officials. About 450 kg of calcium carbide was also seized and destroyed. People who consume fruits that are artificially ripened using calcium carbide blocks are susceptible to diarrhoea.
