TIRUCHI: Wiping sweat from their brows, youngsters undergoing basketball training at St. Joseph’s College courts here get themselves ready to shoot the ball into the cage.

Finding the range is one among the many techniques the youngsters are taught by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) basketball coach M. Rama Subramaniaraja at the summer coaching camp organised by the SDAT Basketball Training Centre.

“The group is a mix of beginners and players with some experience. While teaching fundamentals to the beginners, efforts are also taken to motivate and make them more involved in the sport,” says Mr. Rama Subramaniaraja, adding that the camp aims to help those with genuine interest to take up basketball seriously.

“The players with the experience of playing basketball competitively are given training that helps them perform better in their specialised positions. Say, for a pivot I concentrate on improving the player’s post play moves, rebounding and interception skills. It is very important to make them strong in their role and contribute to the success of the team,” says Mr. Rama Subramaniaraja.

Improving the physical fitness is another area that is given due importance at the 21-day camp attended by more than 35 boys. Mr. Rama Subramaniaraja feels there is a steady increase in the camp attendance over the years and says summer coaching sessions are just a beginning and the youngsters should continue even after the camp concludes.

“I have been talking to the parents and the response has been good.

“Yet, more efforts need to be taken to break the myth that active involvement in sports will spoil the academic career of students,” he says.
