44 per cent of people are living in urban areas, says Jaipal
TAMBARAM: Tamil Nadu is the most urbanised among all States, according to S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Urban Development.
Interacting with Alandur municipal authorities in the presence of a select gathering of media persons at a hotel in St. Thomas Mount on Saturday before leaving Chennai after a two-day visit to the city, Mr. Jaipal Reddy said 44 per cent of people of Tamil Nadu were living in urban areas. And this was higher than any other State in the rest of the country.
The municipal authorities briefed the Minister about the underground drainage project executed in the local body with a significant contribution from people to the project cost. R.S. Bharathi, municipal chairman, told the Minister that the contribution to the project cost alone was Rs. 14 crore. When Mr. Jaipal Reddy wanted to know how it was possible to make people pay for it, Mr. Bharathi said it was not made mandatory, but all the assessees made their contributions as the project progressed.
He also informed the Minister that similar projects with financial contribution from the people were on in 44 towns throughout the country. A massive propaganda was launched and people were briefed about the necessity and the importance of this project and they began to pay the deposit amount that helped in starting the project.
Mr. Reddy was also informed that his Ministry had given the Alandur Municipality the National Urban Water Award for taking significant steps towards effective water management and improvement in service delivery. Among the different categories, Alandur Municipality received the award for “community and private sector participation” in the underground drainage project.
