“Government should provide 50 per cent concession in fare on long distance buses”

CHENNAI: A commission to address various issues concerning senior citizens and the need for creating geriatric wards in all district hospitals were highlighted by the Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Association at its State-level conference held recently.

Giving details of the deliberations at the meeting in Tiruchi, State general secretary of the association S.M. Chellaswamy said the government should also provide 50 per cent concession in the fare on long distance buses for senior citizens. The association also called for proper implementation of the existing 10 per cent travel concession in buses given to the senior citizens.

It is in favour of the age limit for becoming eligible for income tax exemptions, for the senior citizens, to be reduced to 60 years.

Mr. Chellaswamy said the State government should increase its share in the monthly old age pension given to those living below-the-poverty-line from Rs.200 to Rs.400.

A memorandum containing the demands have been submitted to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, he said.
