Minister’s appeal to job guarantee scheme workers

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, inaugurated the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Sattur Panchayat union here on Saturday.

Addressing the workers, the Minister asked them to put in their efforts with a dedication to improve infrastructure in their villages. He handed over identity cards to the registered workers. Four works pertaining to deepening and renovating irrigation tanks and supply channels in Bethareddiyapatti, Mettamalai, Sadayampatti and Sindhapalli were taken up at a cost of Rs.15.08 lakh.

The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said the rural workers would get an opportunity to earn Rs.80 a day.

Stating that only the rural manpower would be used for all the work under the scheme, he said that no machinery would be employed.

Five panchayats chosen

Five panchayats each in 11 unions in the district have been chosen for the implementation of the scheme, he added.

The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, K.R. Azhagirisamy, said that over 60,000 persons have been registered in the 55 panchayats so far.

Sixty per cent of them were women and the registration for the scheme in the district was under way.

New roads and ponds

The district has chosen to undertake formation of new roads and ponds and deepening of tanks and channels.

He expected that the water-starved district could have proper supply channels and create more storage through the scheme.

Besides, the interior village could have better approach roads.
