Students show keen interest to master the game

THANJAVUR: Whenever the youngsters undergoing training at the summer volleyball coaching camp at the Annai Sathya Stadium here get their spike spot on, they flash an instant smile.

“Concentrate on the ball and you will get it right,” advised their coach D. Ravichandran under whose tutelage the 50-odd youngsters are practicing for the past 10 days in the mornings and evenings.

“Once they pick up the fundamentals of the game, I think their enthusiasm to proceed ahead will also double up,” Mr. Ravichandran says.

He adds that a few who joined the camp just to stay fit are also showing keenness to take up the sport seriously.

“That is the beauty of the game. Once you start enjoying, you will get addicted to it. Also, playing volleyball is one of best ways to stay fit.”

Mr. Ravichandran says that interest shown by the girls towards the sport in recent times is an encouraging sign.

“There are close to 20 girls practicing at the camp and their progress has been good. We expect the number to increase in the coming years,” he says.

The youngsters are also given practice in beach volleyball at the stadium during the weekend.

“The school students attending the camp are in the age group of 8 to 12 years. That’s the perfect age to learn the basics,” the District Sports Officer S. Thamilselvan observed.
