Workshop on communication held

TIRUCHI: For those who want to master the art of communication, here is what the speakers of Phoenix ’08, a motivational workshop for students, has to say. “Make learning a habit. It expands one’s intellectual horizon and lends a helping hand for effortless communication.”

The three-day workshop, which began on Friday at Pavendar Bharathidasan College of Engineering and Technology, offered expert suggestions on personality grooming, interview techniques and communication skill. Department Head of Sociology, Bharathidasan University, R. Shanker, lucidly kicked off the session with analogies and historical events.

Quoting lavishly the communication gurus across the world, Dr. Shanker began with dictionary definitions of communication. “It is the basic reciprocity of life and develops proportionately with attitude,” he told the students.

Corporate employers no more look for just the subject knowledge but insist on soft skills. “Keep you minds open for new ideas. That would help you update with latest knowledge.” Optimal utilisation of available materials from libraries will help the student go a long way in inculcating lateral thinking.

A simple yardstick to assess one’s communication skill is to observe the way negative news is put across to others. “A good communicator will use positive words to tone down the negativity of the news.”

Former Chief Workshop Manager, Central Workshops, Southern Railway, Ponmalai, G. R. K. Raju, Department Head of Environmental Science, Bharathidasan University, Ravichandran, Department Head of English, University, Premakumari Marshal and others spoke on ways to hone one’s speaking skills.

Sessions on personality development, interview skills and ‘induction to I. T. world’ were handled by Assistant Director of Employment Exchange P. Suresh Kumar, president of Exnora Subramaniam, and other experts from diverse fields.

Chairman of Faculty of Management Studies, Anna University, V. Damodaran inaugurated the workshop. Managing Trustee R. Arun and Principal V. Kandasamy presided over. Department Head of MBA and MCA of the college V. C. Malarmannan coordinated the event.
