Research works of Tamil scholars being preserved: Minister

TIRUVARUR: Research works of famous Tamil scholars are being preserved in the library of their memorials in the State, said Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, Minister for Information and Publicity, on Sunday.

Presiding over the inaugural function of Dr.U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer memorial at Uthamadhanapuram near Papanasam in Tiruvarur, the Minister said that as many as 47 memorials had been built for various Tamil scholars who rendered yeoman service for Tamil development and literature.

He pointed out that the house of Dr.U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer, popularly called ‘Tamizh Thaatha’ at his native Uthamadhanapuram had been converted into a memorial at a cost of Rs.23 lakh by the Departments of Information and Tamil Development. The memorial has a beautiful library and his Tamil literary works are kept there for reference.

Paying rich tributes to Uthamadhanapuram Venkatasubramanian Swaminathan (Dr.U.Ve.Sa), the Minister said libraries were set up in all the memorials of Tamil scholars in the State for the public to access of all their literary works.

Ko.Si.Mani, Minister for Co-operation, inaugurated the memorial and the library and also a bust-sized bronze image of Dr. U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer. The Minister said Dr.U.Ve.Sa. spent most of his life collecting Tamil literature written on palm manuscripts and publishing them. U.Mathivanan, Minister for Dairy Development, said that the Government accorded priority to honouring scholars who contributed to Tamil development and literature.
