Fire service personnel from Coonoor were brought to the spot

Udhagamandalam: A lorry transporting household items of defence personnel was charred near Kotagiri on Saturday.

According to the police the vehicle was proceeding to Haryana with the house hold items, two motorcycles and some files belonging to the defence personnel moving out of Wellington.

Four persons were travelling in the lorry.

While proceeding near Settupettai, passers by had warned the driver Dileep Gupta that smoke was emanating from the top of the vehicle.


He immediately stopped the lorry and jumped out along with the passengers.

However the entire lorry and the goods were burnt.

Fire service personnel from Coonoor were brought to the spot.


On account of the incident traffic on the Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road was disrupted for over an hour.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Police suspect that the vehicle would have come into contact with an overhead high tension wire.
