VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit on Monday gave away grant to the tune of Rs 5.87 lakh to 19 beneficiaries for laying giving a thrust to sericulture.

The funds sanctioned through the Sericulture Department would be utilised for setting up sheds for silkworm breeding. The cheques were distributed at the Grievance Day session held in the Collectorate.

The assistance was being given for two categories (based on the size of the sheds to be put up): Rs 60,000 and Rs 27,500. The Central and State governments were making equal contributions for the purpose.

Mr. Navnit also handed over a cheque for Rs 25,000 to Velmurgan of Mathur in Kallakurichi block towards defraying the expenses on heart operation for the latter’s wife Meena.

Since, the previous two Mondays happened to be holidays there was a large turn out of people at the Grievance Day session and they handed over 519 petitions to the Collector.
