Part of the efforts to enforce ban on disposable plastics from April 23

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation will begin placing bins in busy commercial areas in the city on Tuesday so that both shopkeepers and the shopping public can dump plastic bags into these.

This is part of the Corporation’s efforts to enforce the ban on disposable plastics from April 23. Nearly 200 bins are to be placed at important shopping areas.

The bins are red in colour to emphasise that items such as carry bags are harmful to the environment.

Departing from a standard approach of announcing a ban and seized the banned items, the Corporation will provide an opportunity to both commercial establishments and the general public to hand over these.

Facilities

One of the problems the city faces is the lack of facilities to dispose of plastic items. It is dumped along with garbage.

Now, the people are faced with the risk of penalty if they discard plastics along with garbage, even if it is aimed at giving up plastics.

Therefore, the civic body has hit upon the idea of providing the bins so that people can voluntarily discard plastic bags and other disposable items.

Top authorities of the Corporation, members of its Environment Protection Committee and councillors will go on a shop-to-shop sensitisation drive planned for April 22, a day prior to the start of the enforcement.

They will also talk to the public visiting the shops on the dangers of using plastics. As this goes on, the bins will be placed outside the shops.

Sources in the civic body say that a meeting with the representatives of the trade and industry, voluntary organisations and the general public will be held in the morning that day.

After explaining to them the objective of the drive, the Corporation will begin placing the bins at busy locations.

Staff and others representing the civic body will offer cloth bags free of cost on that day to the shopping public and persuade them to drop the plastic bags into the bins.

They will also appeal to those owning or running the shops to desist from providing goods in plastic bags.
