Theft committed at Central Warehousing Corporation godown

TAMBARAM: A security guard and his friend, who helped him steal split airconditioners from a godown of the Central Warehousing Corporation in Chitlapakkam and sell them to individuals and dealers at low rates, have been arrested.

Police are also interrogating a consumer durable dealer in Washermenpet who received some of the stolen goods and sold them to his customers.

Onida stocks consumer durables at the godown. Company representatives said airconditioners, television sets, washing machines and other electronic appliances meant for distribution all over south India were stocked there.

In March, executives from the company made a stock audit and found that over 70 split airconditioners were missing. A complaint was lodged at the Chitlapakkam police station on Sunday, who concluded after preliminary investigations that the crime could have been carried out only by insiders.

After a thorough probe, police detained B. Dayanidhi (28) of Perungalathur working as a security guard at the godown. He confessed to having committed the crime along with his friend Saravanan of Pazhavanthangal. Police said Dayanidhi used a duplicate key to open the godown and the entire lot of 70 split ACs were transferred out of the Warehouse premises in two trips, first on February 23 and another, 10 days later.

They managed to establish contact with a consumer durable dealer in Washermenpet to whom they gave some of the ACs. With the cash, they bought three cents of land in a village near Tambaram and also purchased an autorickshaw. While the market rate of the split ACs is around Rs. 21,000, the duo had sold them for about Rs.15,000 each.

The police have recovered some of the airconditioners.
