He was operating ambulance on contract basis at Government Hospital

CHENNAI: A person, who allegedly stole a van and used it for transporting the dead from the Government General Hospital, has been arrested by the Elephant Gate police.

According to police, U. Sundaramurthy (30), a resident of Gandhi Nagar slum opposite Island Grounds, was operating an ambulance service on contract basis at the hospital for several years. Of the two vehicles that he “owned”, one was a tempo traveller that he had stolen some time ago. He had altered its registration details and painted the vehicle in white . On Sunday night, a special police team, formed by M. Ravi, Joint Commissioner (North), detained the vehicle for a random check.

Suspecting that the vehicle’s papers were forged, the team questioned Sundaramurthy, who confessed to having stolen the vehicle. He also said he had procured the Registration Certificate (RC) of a condemned vehicle that had been disposed of at a scrap shop in Salem.

He had tinkered with the original chassis number by imprinting the number of the condemned vehicle found in the RC book.

He also used the condemned vehicle’s registration number.

The police arrested him and seized the two vehicles.
