It was here the Mahakavi delivered his last lecture

ERODE: About 87 years ago, her grandfather Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi visited what was then the Karungalpalayam Reading room to deliver a lecture. The bard spoke on the topic ‘man is immortal.’

The July 31, 1921 lecture turned out to be his last, for he died days later in Chennai.

On Monday, the granddaughter, Vijaya Bharathi, came calling to the Karungalpalayam Library from Vancouver, Canada, where she is a faculty.

She told a gathering how ‘elated and excited’ she felt to lecture at her grandfather’s last lecture venue.

Ms. Bharathi, a researcher on her grandfather’s works, said: “I’m convinced that he was not only a poet and patriot but also a philosopher, for he had beautifully dealt with advaita philosophy in his works.” She said she realised that during the course of her research.

The author of over 100 books said she was happy about the efforts of the organisation, Makkal Sindhanai Pervai, to collect books and other works by and on the great poet. She also had a word of praise for bringing out the last lecture in audio form.

Among those whom she met was K.S. Thangaperumal, nephew of the man who hosted the bard. Mr. Thangaperumal is the brother’s son of Thangaperumal Pillai, a lawyer who managed the reading room. The latter was instrumental in inviting the Mahakavi to Erode.

Ms. Bharathi said she would include the Karungalpalayam Library in her itinerary whenever she visited India. Stalin Gunasekaran of the Pervai welcomed the gathering.
