CHENNAI: What could a software professional, an aspiring film director and a management graduate who has played state level cricket have in common? Their passion for cinema. It has brought a team of youngsters from diverse backgrounds together for ‘Vennila kabbadikuzhu,’ a film to be launched on Friday.
Producer Anand Chakravarthy of Imagine Creations gave up his IT job in the United States to come back home to pursue his dream — film production. “We are really excited about this project. We know the kind of hard work this requires and are trying our best,” he says.
After the roaring success of films such as ‘Lagaan,’ ‘Chak De India’ and ‘Chennai-28,’ all woven around sports-related themes, it is probably a smart choice of subject for the new comers.
Debutant director Suseendran has assisted directors S.D. Sabha and Ezhil. Having grown up seeing his father — a kabbadi champion and a former captain of the Ottanchathiram team — play and win matches, it has been the director’s dream to make a film on kabbadi. “I was in total awe of the game and have always wanted to tell the story of those who play it. Infact, the name of the film comes from the name of the Ottanchathiram team, which has 40 years’ history,” he says.
Hero of the film Viishnu, a cricketer-cum-management graduate found the film industry most fascinating while considering career options. “During a game, I was injured and sustained a shin fracture. I was at home for a while, resting and watching a lot of films. It was then that I considered this option very seriously,” says the young actor. The sportsman in him can’t seem to wait to get onto the field and play, but this time, in front of the camera.
This film also marks the entry of Kanjira artiste V. Selvaganesh, son of ghatam maestro ‘Vikku’ Vinayakaram, into film music. Well known in the Carnatic and fusion music circles, he is said to have composed music that is very stylish and rich in feel, to gel with the script. This would also be the first film for cinematographer J. Laxman Kumar, a product of Rajeev Menon’s cinematography institute. He has worked with cinematographer Rathnavelu earlier. The heroine is also most likely to be a new comer, the crew says. The average age of team members is only around 25. But they are here to prove a point.
