SALEM: Rain battered the city and its suburbs for the second consecutive day on Tuesday inundating low lying areas. It rained for nearly two hours on Monday night too.

The sudden summer rain brought copious inflow into many reservoirs in the districts of Salem and Namakkal. Water at Ammapet lake in Salem had already touched the brim. Other tanks also had been receiving adequate water.

A fault in the Karuppur substation plunged many important parts in the city on Sunday night in darkness for nearly an hour on Monday night forcing the students, who appear for SSLC examinations to suffer.

Sankagiri received maximum rainfall of 52.2 mm for 24 hours ending on Monday night followed by Attur 46.4, Salem 27, Yercaud 25.6, Omalur 19.4, Edapadi 11.2, Vazhapadi 10.1, Gengavalli 9.8 and Mettur 9.2 mm.

Tourists in the hill station of Yercaud were also forced to remain indoors thanks to incessant rain and heavy fog.
