COIMBATORE: Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) clashed in the Coimbatore Corporation Council on Thursday over the latter’s charges of kickbacks in the project for establishing two sewage treatment plants.

Charges and counter charges of corruption led to a scuffle between the two sections.

The urgent meeting convened to pass resolutions on the Pilloor Phase II drinking water scheme and the treatment plants project began with the clash between these parties.

In the end, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India joined the AIADMK in demanding fresh tenders for the treatment plants.

The main Opposition, DMK, and ally, Congress got the resolutions passed even as Communist parties, the AIADMK and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam raised slogans demanding re-tender.

At the start of the meeting, the AIADMK appeared to have been alone in raising the charges of irregularities and also in demanding a probe and fresh tenders. The CPI joined it half-way.

Then the CPI (M) launched into a vociferous opposition to the opinion of the DMK that the resolutions can be passed after scrutiny.
