THENI: The Public Works Department has issued second flood warning to five districts near the banks of Vagai River at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the storage level in Vagai dam touched 68.5 feet. Third and final warning would be issued and excess water released simultaneously if the level touched 69 feet. Collectors in Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts have been alerted to evacuate people residing near river banks and move them to safe areas.
With heavy flow in Kottakudi, Vaigai amd Mullaperiyar rivers, the storage level in Vaigai dam has gone up rapidly. The level in Periyar dam has also been increasing steadily, thanks to heavy inflow into the dam. But Thekkadi and Periyar dam site received moderate showers only.
With no discharge for irrigation, storage level was inching towards total permissible level of 136 feet. But intensity of rain has come down in several parts of the district. Shanmuga Nadhi dam has received highest rain consecutively for the past four days.
Revenue Minister I. Periasamy inspected damaged crop at Melmangalam and advised the Collector to assess the crop damage and submit report to the government.
Suitable compensation would be given to affected farmers. Collector S.J. Chiru said that 895 acres, including 595 acres of paddy, in the district were damaged.
