TIRUNELVELI: Even as intermittent drizzle continued in the district on Thursday also, the Collector, G. Prakash, has geared up the official machinery to prepare accurate estimates on the damage caused to crop and properties due to the unseasonal rain that continues to lash the district for the past one week.
Officials from Department of Agriculture and Department of Revenue will jointly hold this exercise across the district to assess the exact damage caused to the crops, particularly, to paddy cultivated on several thousands of acres. Since the unexpected rain lashed the entire district even as the farmers were about to start harvesting of ‘pisanam’ season paddy, the loss suffered by the agriculturists is expected to be enormous.
According to the first report filed by the officials who surveyed the damage to paddy and plantain cultivated on 2,544 hectares in Ambasamudram, Tirunelveli, Palayamkottai, Alangulam, Nanguneri, Veerakeralamputhur and Tenkasi have suffered extensive damage due to the rain.
Steps have been taken to disburse compensation to the farmers facing loss.
