Krishnagiri: Panchayat presidents should work closely with the district administration to make every panchayat self-sufficient.
The schemes of the Union and State Governments should be properly implemented, Collector Santhosh Babu has said.
Inaugurating a two-day training programme for elected representatives of village panchayats, panchayat unions and district panchayat organised by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) here on Wednesday, the Collector said the elected representatives of local bodies should cooperate with the district administration to ensure holistic development of rural areas.
The active participation of panchayat presidents is essential for the effective implementation and monitoring of various rural development projects.
The Central and State Governments were executing several schemes such as Swarnjayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), Total Sanitation Campaign and Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam for improving the infrastructure and the quality of life of poor people in the rural areas.
The training was aimed at equipping the participants with skills for the effective implementation of development schemes.
Development works such as formation of concrete paths, laying of drinking water pipelines, creation of ponds, building reading rooms, crematorium improvement works and establishment of playgrounds and improvement of village markets could be carried out under the AGAMT scheme.
All villages in the district would be covered under the scheme under a phased manner. Panchayat presidents should create awareness among the locals on the ill effects of child marriages. They should also review the progress of enrolment of out-of-school children Mr. Babu added.
