TAMBARAM: A signal problem affected the movement of a long distance train at Tambaram railway station on Tuesday morning.

The Pandian Express from Madurai stopped ahead of the Tambaram station as it did not receive signal to enter platform numbers 8 or 9, where long distance express trains usually halt, due to a “point problem.”

After some time, it was made to halt on platform 1, used only by suburban electric trains.

The platform could accommodate only 13 compartments, while Pandian Express had 24 coaches. As a result nearly a dozen compartments halted outside the platform.

Passengers, including women, children and senior citizens, from these compartments had to jump down to the ground. While the express would usually stop only for two minutes, it halted for a few more minutes on Tuesday morning, Southern Railway sources said.
