On growth of southern districts
MADURAI: Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has come up with a wish list for south Tamil Nadu in the forthcoming general budget.
S. Rethinavelu, chamber president, in a statement, said that trade and industrial growth in the State was more than satisfactory but with no uniformity as South Tamil Nadu continued to languish in retarded industrial and economic development without adequate infrastructure.
The chamber called for a revamp of tax and labour laws to make it conducive for investments from home and abroad.
Another demand was to transfer the functioning of government departments from Chennai to Madurai.
The wish list included allocation of sufficient funds in the budget for early implementation of linking of rivers within the State with a focus on simultaneity of the project initiation from north and southern ends.
The Madurai airport modernisation project should be expedited and the Chief Minister should urge Hyundai Motor Corporation to start its next venture here.
Construction work on Tidel and information technology parks should be hastened and impediments in tax laws that restrained industrial growth removed.
The chamber called for rationalisation of value added tax rates and formation of an advisory committee to remove bottlenecks in agricultural market committee cess rules.
An exclusive policy for small scale sector, with exemption from enforcement of labour laws for the first five years should be formulated, the statement said.
