Senior citizens and pensioners association plea

CHENNAI: Members of Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens and Pensioners Welfare Association have demanded that the recommendations of K.S.Sastry Committee on health insurance be implemented soon.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister recently, association’s State general secretary S.M.Chellaswamy said that the recommendations of the Committee were the best outcome of the National Policy on Older Persons. The early implementation of the recommendations would be beneficial for the elderly.

He also listed out several recommendations of the committee on health insurance for elderly persons. Senior citizens must have access to health insurance and they must also be covered for treatments under other branches of medicine such as ayurveda and homeopathy, the committee report said.

The committee also recommended that the people must enter health insurance scheme when they turn 50 years to build sufficient reserve for their long term viability and secure themselves against health risks. Senior citizens must also be given guaranteed renewal of their insurance without age limit.

Policies based on the concept of healthy ageing should also be provided where the premiums would be determined on the health condition of the insured person. There should be a separate set-up in insurance companies for quick processing of matters, including disposal of claims. The base premium of Rs.3,000 per year for an insurance cover must be decreased to Rs.1,000 to facilitate affordability of more senior citizens, the committee report added.
