AMBUR: A total of 1,500 employees of two private shoe companies at Ambur in Vellore district staged a road roko on the National Highways near Solur to protest against one of the companies declaring a ‘Lock Out’ here on Sunday.

The police said that United India Shoe Corporation Private Limited was bifurcated into two companies on June 1, 2006. Some of the employees that time had been transferred to the company’s sister concern, United India Shoe Upper Private Limited. The protesting employees of the sister concern said that they had been given the Provident Fund code by the mother concern right from the days they had joined duty.

But now the United India Shoe Upper Private Limited had issued new Provident Fund Code to all the employees who have been transferred to the sister concern . Similarly, six of the employees of the United India Shoe Upper Private Limited had been transferred to another shoe unit at Pallikondan. Some employees said that they were against the move taken by United India Shoe Upper Private Limited. As a sign of protest, they stopped working since February 17, 2008.
