Police personnel are being trained

to handle jungle operations,

says R. Rajaram

Time: 11 a.m. Venue: Naranamangalam, a wooded area tucked a few kilometres away from the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway in Perambalur district.

Armed with the advanced Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) weapon and 9 mm pistols, a core team of police personnel of Perambalur district in camouflaged dress undergo a rigorous jungle training programme under the watchful eyes of their instructors. The policemen are attending the camp to learn the nuances of jungle operations in the hilly area.

Over the past few days, the jungle training exercise is being carried out in forest areas in all the districts falling in the Central Zone comprising Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Karur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur. The Tiruchi team is being imparted training in the foothills of Puliancholai.

Teams of instructors from the Special Task Force (STF), which was involved in anti-Veerappan operations, have been deputed to districts to train police personnel. The trainees are men below the age of 35.

The training covers ambush and counter ambush, camp defences, map reading, shoot-to-kill exercise, tracking and trapping in hills, buddy concepts, first-aid in jungle, use of global positioning system, rock climbing and rappelling, camouflage and concealment, weapons tactics and silent drill.

It is a simulation of a jungle operation, says a senior police officer. The very idea of conducting the training is to keep a jungle-trained force ready in every district in order to respond promptly without having to wait for STF personnel in case of emergency, say the sources. The training concludes on February 13.
