Lacks proper shelters, toilets and facilities to sit
ALANGAYAM: Passengers at Alangayam bus stand suffer owing to lack of basic facilities. The town panchayat incurs loss as the bus stand fails to generate revenue, which can be used for small development works.
Alangayam somehow could not provide basic facilities at the bus stand even when there was good movement of town and outstation buses, residents alleged.
There were services to Chennai and Tirupattur too, they added.
School students suffered the most at the bus stand. The crowd was always heavy and encroachments by petty vendors at the entrance aggravated the problem. Even though the Alangayam panchayat union office was close to the bus stand, the officials could not evict the encroachers, as an alternative site could not be provided to them.
The residents of Alangayam were economically backward and many of them survived by running petty shops and working as agriculture labourers. This forced the authorities to go soft on the encroachers, the residents said.
However, not more than a few buses could be parked inside the bus stand owing to the lack of sufficient space. Several drivers were forced to park their vehicles on the main road, which often led to traffic snarls, the residents said. Passengers had to sit in the open as the bus stand lacked a shelter, the sources said. The problem was worse during summers and rain. There were no facilities for the passengers to sit and the aged suffered the most, the residents alleged.
The bus stand also lacked toilet facilities and many were urinating in the open.
