Buses yet to ply on stretch between Tirupur and Thekkalur via Vanjipalayam

TIRUPUR: The widened stretch between Tirupur and Thekkalur via Vanjipalayam from single lane to double lane is gaining popularity among the regular commuters.

The stretch, which offers a smooth ride with lesser number of vehicles, is proving to be a third alternative route to Coimbatore from Tirupur. The road starts from Pushpa Theatre Junction in Tirupur, passes through College Road, Anaipalayam and Vanjipalayam and joins the National Highway 47 at Thekkalur.

According to a Highways Department official, travelling on the recently widened stretch reduces the distance between Tirupur and Coimbatore by 4.2 km.

Vehicle users mostly four-wheelers are increasingly using the stretch now. Besides taking the advantage of reduced distance, this road brings down the travel time and helps the motorists avoid travelling through the congested Avanashi town.

A regular commuter points out that travel on this stretch is not a tedious one though it has many curves and sudden slopes. He wanted the curves to be removed to provide a straight highway to prevent accidents.

Travelling on the National Highway touching Avanashi is becoming increasingly dangerous with inadequate width and increasing movement of trucks.

The official says the Government had spent Rs.2.75 crore to widen the 16.8-km stretch.

Till recently, it had a width of 3.75 metre. The road margins were strengthened.

Interestingly, the stretch is serving mostly to light motor vehicles as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited is yet to introduce bus services on this route.

Encroachments

The road users say that the authorities should remove encroachments on College Road, particularly at the entry point near Pushpa Theatre Junction before introducing bus services on the stretch.

The revenue and municipal officials have to take the initiative to remove the encroachments, which remain a hindrance to the vehicular movement.

Introduction of bus services on the stretch will obviously bring down the pressure on the Tirupur-Avanashi Highway. The commuters appeal to the Highways authorities to provide a by-pass without going through the village of Kamanaicken Palayam, near Thekkalur. They also urge the authorities to uproot a tree at the entrance of the Vanjipalayam railway gate.
