NAMAKKAL: Reacting to reports that backyard poultry birds are dying of ‘mysterious illness,’ in a few villages in Paramathi Velur taluk in the last two days, the Namakkal district administration has despatched teams of veterinarians to these areas to carry out an investigation.

The sudden death of backyard poultry birds in Villipalayam, Kuchipalayam, Sungaranpatti and Bettapalayam villages in Paramathi Velur and Mohanur blocks had caused widespread panic among the villagers and industry people. As many as 100 birds have since died, said a villager.

High level teams from Veterinary Department in Kabilar Malai, Paramathi Velur, Namakkal and Tiruchengode visited these villages on Monday and collected blood samples from the dead chickens. Their preliminary investigation had revealed that the chicken perished due to the attack of Ranikhet disease, which according to a veterinarian is a common disease.

Hence the teams had started undertaking the exhaustive exercise of administering vaccination against the disease.

Namakkal District Collector G. Sundaramoorthy clarified that laboratory results had proved that the birds died of Ranikhet disease and not of bird flu.
