Structures at a hotel demolished
CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation took over a part of land at The Park Hotel in Nungambakkam on Sunday. A bulldozer demolished all structures at the hotel which came in the way of the land reclaimed by the Corporation.
The Zonal Officer for Nungambakkam M.S. Premnath said the land was being claimed as part of the open space reservation (OSR) land due to be given to the Corporation.
“Any private structure on land exceeding 10,000 square meters has to rightfully present 10 per cent of that back to the Corporation as OSR land along with road access as per the town planning rules.
“Therefore today we are taking over 21, 140 square feet of land from this property,” he said.
The Corporation officials have made a demarcation from the second entrance of the hotel, adjoining the night club Pasha, up to the car park.
Asked why the decision was taken on Sunday, after a period of more than five years over which the hotel was allowed ownership, Mr. Premnath said the Corporation was in the process of verifying documents and ownership during this period.
“We anticipate certain problems over the exact demarcation line; for this purpose we will be bringing in our surveyors soon. But as far as ownership is concerned we have all documents to prove that this land is part of the OSR land,” he said.
The associate director (front office) The Park, Akshay Dimri, said: “We bought this property along with the building from erstwhile owners. “The Government stated it is OSR land. Today being a Sunday, we will be consulting our lawyers about this and give an official statement tomorrow,” he said.
Unofficial sources from the hotel claim that the value of the land taken over was about 20 crores.
