Posters put up in front of illegal structures

Coimbatore: The officials of the Local Planning Authority and Town Planning Department of the Coimbatore Corporation with police protection on Friday commenced drive for demolishing the unauthorised buildings and those coming up in clear violation of the building rules.

The Local Planning Authority commenced a drive recently to sensitise the builders, promoters and investors on the need for displaying a culture of compliance. The authorities under directions from the Chairman of the Local Planning Authority and District Collector, Neeraj Mittal and Member-Secretary and Joint Director of LPA, Manickavasagam Pillai conducted a study to ascertain the number of such buildings. In the first instance, the authorities asked the promoters of the buildings to display a board containing the construction details, plan approval number and so on.

In the first phase, posters were put up in front of the buildings that were either totally unauthorised or those having rule violations cautioning people to desist from investing, buying or taking such buildings on rent.

In the next phase, the violators were served with show-cause notice asking them as to why action should not be initiated in razing down the structure at the cost of the owner of the building. Normally, after the procedure, the authorities would give time to the promoter of the building to either make changes in the structure complying with the rule and go in for approval of the plan or in removing the structures. More than 100 notices had been served so far and 11 such buildings with very serious violations had been identified for bringing them under the demolition drive.

In the case of those going on appeal, the authorities waited for the stipulated time. After getting a clearance certificate from the concerned agencies such as local body, courts and appellate authorities that no appeal or revision petition was pending in respect of the building, the authorities on Friday started the demolition drive which was led by Mr. Manickavasagam and Corporation Town Planning Officer M. Soundara Rajan.

The third and fourth floor of one such building on Avanashi Road near the flyover was razed down by the workers.

Officials said that the paper works in respect of other buildings and identification of those without approval and those with violations were going on simultaneously and said that the demolition drive would be stepped up in the coming weeks.
