TIRUCHI: V.M.S.Kalyani, a Congress member who had filed her nomination papers for the by-election to ward 44 of the Tiruchi Corporation, was arrested after she burnt the party flag and pictures of the party leaders in the city on Thursday.

On Wednesday, six persons of the party had filed their nomination papers for the by-polls on Wednesday. Of these, the official authorisation letter from the party was filed along with the nomination by R.Hema.

Irked on being denied a ticket by the Congress for the seat, Ms.Kalyani burnt the flag and pictures in front of her house at V.O.C. Street in the City. On receipt of information, police rushed to the spot and arrested her. She was later released on bail.

To resign

Later, Ms.Kalyani said she had planned to resign from the party.

Meanwhile, the nominations of all the 15 candidates for the ward has been declared accepted after scrutiny by the Corporation officials.
