Heavy rush expected on New Year's day

NAGAPATTINAM: The Nagapattinam district police have made elaborate security and other arrangements in important temples, churches and mosques in several parts of the district to facilitate the devotees to worship and offer prayers on the New Year day on Sunday without any difficulty.

Police sources told The Hindu that thousands of devotees and pilgrims were expected to visit the famous Sri Vaidyanathaswamy Temple at Vaitheeswarankovil, Lord Subramanyaswamy Temple at Sikkal and the deities at several Vaishnava Divyadesams and Navagraha temples located in the district and also the famous Velankanni Church and Nagore dargah for prayers.

Pilgrims from various parts of the country had already started pouring into Velankanni, ''Lourdes of the East'' near here from the Christmas Day onwards for offering prayers for the New Year midnight holy mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Health.

The flow of pilgrims that was affected last year to the Velankanni church due to the tsunami disaster had increased manyfold this year. The church administration had made arrangements and provided all basic amenities to the devotees. The petty shops near the shore in Velankanni had once again getting roaring business.

Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health in Velankanni is located on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, amid calm surroundings of palm groves and nestles. It stands as a beacon in the diocese of Thanjavur and attracts not only Catholic pilgrims but also people from all religions who flock to this Shrine to experience the love and care of a compassionate Mother of suffering humanity.

Devotees throng Tirunallar temple

The Karaikal district administration and police have made elaborate arrangements for the devotees to worship at the famous Saneeswara Bhagavan temple at Tirunallar near Karaikal. Devotees from several parts of the country gathered to offer prayers to Lord Saneeswara on the New Year day.
