Water release from Vaigai dam todayMADURAI: The Public Works Department will begin release of water from Vaigai dam for irrigating ayacuts in the first reach of the Vaigai, between Peranai and Viraganur dam, at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

Five hundred cusecs of water will be released for 10 days and only 220 cusecs on the 11th day.

Water release for irrigating the Cumbum valley and double-crop area began on June 1.

The level in the Periyar dam on Friday stood at 122.5 feet with an inflow of 401 cusecs and a discharge of 1,100 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 56.56 feet with an inflow of 506 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 5,321 mcft.

Disruption in telephone services tonightTelephone services in Ellis Nagar, East Masi Street, Tallakulam and Villapuram exchanges would be disrupted in the midnight of Saturday as the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited would take up equipment upgradation work, a statement said.

Pirated VCDs seizedAt least 650 pirated VCDs of Tamil movies were seized from a house in Tirunagar here on Friday.

Following a tip-off, a team of the Video Piracy Cell, led by Inspector C. Shanmuganathan, raided a house on Srinivasa Nagar Fourth Street in the evening and arrested V. Saravanan (25). A computer, enabled with a CD-writer, used for producing pirated VCDs was also seized. Staff Reporter
