25 hurt as van overturnsTIRUCHI: Twenty-five persons sustained injuries when the van in which they were travelling overturned on the Musiri-Thuraiyur road at Ayethampatti on Tuesday.

The accident occurred when the occupants of the van were returning to Thuraiyur after immersing Vinayaka idol at Musiri. The van driver, Ramakrishnan, was arrested for rash driving.

Deliting work inspectedThe Corporation Commissioner, B. Balachandran, on Wednesday, inspected desilting work being carried out in important drainage channels in the city since August 26.

A press release said the Commissioner inspected one such work being carried out using an earthmover at Chinthamani Channel near Karur Bypass Road.

He instructed the engineers to widen the channel and remove the silt and plants near the bund. He also inspected desilting work near Sethuraman Pillai Colony.

BHEL celebrationAs part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the Tiruchi unit plans to distribute sweets to its retired employees.

They could collect the sweets by showing their medical outpatient book or any other proof or sending the same through someone else with due authorisation. The sweets would be distributed between 10 a.m and 5 p.m. at MD auditorium , RSK Dispensary at Main Guard Gate, BHEL Dispensary at Kattur and Srinivasa Mahal at Srirangam. Sweets will also be distributed at the MD Auditorium on September 1 and 2 for those who could not collect the same on August 31.
