Water levelMADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Monday stood at 120.20 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 73 cusecs and a discharge of 1,000 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 43.50 (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 680 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 3,590 mcft. Thaniyamangalam recorded 22 mm of rainfall followed by Idayapatti 5 and Melur 2.

Serina case: cash handed overThe entire money seized in the Serina case (nearly Rs. 1.4 crore) was handed over to a special court here on Monday. The cash was taken into possession by the Essential Commodities Court and deposited in the treasury. While the first part of Rs. 80 lakh was taken into legal custody on August 3, the rest was handed over by the nationalised bank (where the money was deposited in 2003) to the court on Monday evening, police sources said.

Residents block road over rising crimeSome residents of Avaniapuram resorted to a road blockade on the Villapuram Main Road on Monday seeking police action to prevent frequent thefts and chain-snatching incidents in the locality.

Traffic on the busy road was disrupted for half-an-hour.

Senior police officials visited the spot and prevailed upon the agitators to disperse, police sources said.
