TIRUCHI: The Commissioner of Police, Shankar Jiwal, has issued an order prohibiting assemblies, meetings, processions, agitations and demonstrations for a period of 15 days from 6 p.m. on March 2 to 6 p.m. on March 17 to maintain public peace and safety within the city, a release said on Friday.
A 30-year-old man died after he fell into a drainage canal near the Soolakarai Mariamman Temple on Thanjavur Road here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Rajagopal of Palakkarai.
He was riding a bicycle to his house when he suddenly developed fits and fell into the drainage canal and died. The body was recovered from the canal.
Two persons claiming to be policemen allegedly took away seven sovereigns of gold jewellery from a house at Mekkudi Nadupatti near Manikandam by diverting the attention of the house owner on Thursday.
The unidentified duo came in a motorcycle to the house of one Saravanan and asked him to produce the documents of his gas connection. The two reportedly told Saravanan that he had wrongly obtained the gas connection. They then searched the almirah under the guise of checking the documents and allegedly took away the gold jewellery by diverting the attention of Saravanan. They left the house claiming that they would return in the night. Saravanan lodged a complaint with the police.
The Tamil Nadu Traders Federation has appealed to the State Government to reduce the tax on butter and ghee from 12.5 to 4 per cent. A memorandum containing this plea was submitted to the Commercial Taxes Minister, S.N. M. Ubayathullah, in Thanjavur on Thursday by the office bearers of the Federation, a release said.
Public darshan at Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple will commence at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday (instead of the usual schedule at 5.30 a.m.), in the wake of the lunar eclipse. In a press release issued here on Friday, the Executive Officer of the temple, P. R. Ashok, said that the eclipse would occur from 1.48 a.m. to 7.50 a.m. on Sunday. Similarly, the sanctum sanctora at the sub-temples Sri Ujjayini Om Kaliamman Temple, Sri Adi Mariamman Temple, Sri Mutheeswarar Temple and Sri Bhojeeswarar Temple would be opened for public darshan at 8.30 a.m.
A mass prayer under the auspices of the Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Namabhiksha Kendra, Chennai, will be held at the Karparakshagi Mahal here on March 10.
