Four petty shops near the Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple in the district were destroyed in a fire in the wee hours of Wednesday. The shops contained pooja articles. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Computer centre raided, owner held
The Palakkarai police arrested Karthikmani, the owner of a computer centre at Eda Theru main road on Tuesday, on the charge of screening porn movies
using CDs in the centre and collecting money from the visitors. According to police, Karthikmani had downloaded pornography material from the website in his computer. Acting on information, the police raided the centre and held Karthikmani who was later remanded. Twelve CDs were seized from the accused.
Gold jewellery weighing 70 sovereigns was reported stolen from a house on Alexandria Road here recently. Based on a complaint from the house owner Veeramani, the Cantonment Police are investigating.
Tax collection drive
The Corporation will conduct an intensive tax collection drive from March 1 to 15. All tax collection centres functioning at the Corporation offices will remain open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all working days and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays during the drive, the Commissioner B. Balachandran said in a press release. Residents could also pay the property and water tax dues at the online collection centres at the designated branches of various banks, the release added.
