CITU hails decision
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (autorickshaw wing) has welcomed the decision to fix meters for autorickshaws in the State.
According to its general secretary (Madurai branch), R. Deivaraj, introduction of meter fare structure for autorickshaws was a long-pending demand of the CITU in view of fuel prices being revised on many occasions. Like in Karnataka, the Government of Tamil Nadu should offer Rs. 5,000 as subsidy for autorickshaws with approved gas connection, he added.
Concern over encounter killings
Evidence, a human rights organisation, has expressed concern over "increasing" encounter killings in the State. Pointing to the death of Tori Mari, a suspect allegedly involved in many grave offences, in a police encounter near Melur on January 13, its Executive Director, A. Kathir, said seven encounter killings were recorded since May 2006. A fact-finding team visited Panayankudi irrigation tank near Vellalapatti where Tori Mari was shot dead.
Unless the law enforcing agencies followed good custody management systems , the police would continue to involve in human rights abuses,he alleged.
