Farmers, instead of relying on institutions charging high interest rates, should approach primary agricultural cooperative societies and nationalised bank branches for financial assistance, said Darez Ahamed, Collector, here on Wednesday.

Interacting with a group of farmers at Veppanthattai after inspecting the development work being implemented by the Agriculture Department, Mr. Ahamed said that the cooperative institutions and the nationalised banks provided loans at reasonable interest rates.

Mr. Ahamed inspected the vast stretch of forest area – 50 hectares at Esanai and 250 hectares at Vengalam - and advised officials to classify them under the reserve forest category.
