MADURAI: Applications are invited from school and college students seeking admissions to government hostels run for backward and most backward classes and denotified community.
In a statement, Collector T. Udhayachandran, said applications should be handed over to the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officer or wardens of respective hostels before June 30 for school students and July 31 for college students. Students from Standard IV to Plus-Two and those pursuing polytechnic, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and whose parents' annual income does not exceed Rs. 50,000 are eligible to join hostels. The boys should reside within a five-km radius from hostels. This condition is not applicable to girls.
Students will be provided free food and board. Tenth and 12th students would be given two sets of uniform and special guides.
Twenty hostels for school students, including seven exclusively for girls, belonging to backward classes were being run in the district. Besides, two hostels, one each for boys and girls for most backward classes, were functioning in Sedapatti and Samayanallur respectively. Two hostels, one each for college boys and girls belonging to backward classes, were in Sathamangalam. Five hostels for denotified community boys were run at Varichiyur, Karuppayoorani, Alanganallur, Kappalur and Nagamalai Pudukottai.
