Sabha urge government to restart DAP production

Tuticorin: The members of Centre of Indian Trade Unions and All India Kissan Sabha (AIKS) staged a demonstration at Muthiapuram near here on Thursday.

They urged the government to take over the SPIC (Southern Petrochemcial Industries Corporation Limited) unit here to restart the production of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and urea from the firm.

They pointed out that closure of DAP and Urea production units at the SPIC for the past many months led to severe shortage of fertilizers across the State.

The agitators also wanted the government to stop import of fertilizers at high costs, rather steps should be taken to augment production within the country.

S. Appadurai, district vice-president of CITU, S Sankarasubbhu, district secretary of AIKS, M Murugan, district convener of CITU, and R Ruseel, state committee member of CITU, spoke.
