MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has requested the authorities to consider reversing the recent move of making one-way the stretch from East Gate to Munichalai Junction on Kamarajar Salai.

Chamber president V. Neethi Mohan said, “Kamarajar Salai is one of the few busy roads in the heart of Madurai with hardly any traffic jams or bottlenecks.”

The sudden decision to convert several two-way roads to one-way roads had been made without consulting trade bodies such as the Chamber and the public, he said.

If the one-way roads were necessary, it should be enforced only for heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses. There was an imperative need for putting up road dividers at several places in the city along with reducing to appropriate size many roundabouts, he said.

Mr. Neethi Mohan also appealed to the authorities to consider reverting to the old system of traffic on Kamarajar Salai till a debate on its pros and cons was conducted, said a press release.
