COIMBATORE: Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony will inaugurate here on February 2 the DRDO-Bharathiar University Centre for Life Sciences at Bharathiar University.
The centre is a joint venture of the university and the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
State Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy will preside over the inaugural function.
Minister for Highways and Minor Ports M.P. Saminathan, Secretary of Defence Research and Development Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace A. Sivathanu Pillai and Chief Controller (Research and Development) of DRDO W. Selvamurthy will take part in the inaugural.
In recent years, the DRDO has been building a strong linkage with the academia.
It has, therefore, planned to increase funding for promoting extra-mural research in basic Defence Sciences in universities and other academic institutions.
As part of this, the DRDO has planned the establishment of three Centres of Excellence in select universities.
The one to be opened at Bharathiar University on Tuesday will be the first centre to become fully functional, according to a press release issued from the university.
This Centre has been the outcome of two decades of close interaction between DRDO and Bharathiar University. The other two Centres, which are also being established, include the High Energy Materials Centre in Hyderabad and the Microwave Centre in Kolkata.
The main thrust of the centre at Coimbatore will be on support to Life Sciences research for keeping the country’s soldiers fighting fit under varied operational conditions and extreme and hazardous environment.
