The patients would be selected for blood tests before being treated

VELLORE: The Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the free anti-retroviral therapy (ART) for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients at the Vellore Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai on Friday. Five patients received the therapy.

According to a release from Dr.Ravishankar, ART would be administered free of cost to patients who were selected for the treatment. The patients would be subjected to four blood tests, namely, blood TC, DC and Hb % test, liver function test, renal function test and CD4 count before being selected for the treatment.

The blood samples taken from the patients would be sent to the Government TB Sanatorium, Tambaram, the State government's AIDS referral centre.

On knowing the results of the laboratory investigations of their blood, ART would be administered to those who were need of it.

The therapy was being given to AIDS patients who were in the first and second stages of the disease and had a CD count of less than 350, to those in the third and fourth stages and those who were asymptomatic and had a CD4 count of less than 200.
