Four hundred and thirty three antique coins kept in urns were unearthed at Mettilpatti village in Vilathikulam taluk on Sunday.

Besides, twenty one pieces of gold ornaments were also unearthed.

According to Vilathikulam Tahsildar S. Sundarakrishnan the incident came to light, when workers were engaged in digging the ground to construct a septic tank for R. Chinna Solayappa.

Though the coins were found on March 7, the incident was brought to the attention of officials only on Sunday, he said.

Initially, 208 coins were recovered and after police personnel conducted search operations in more than twenty houses situated close to the construction site 225 more coins were recovered.

Enquiries were on with the two workmen involved in digging the field.

Two other workmen and house owner Mr. Solayappa were absconding, Mr. Sundarakrishnan said.

District Revenue Officer S. Amirtha Jothi said the recovered items would be handed over to the Treasury office.
