The district unit of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has demanded the State Government to deal with the agitators of the anti-Kudunkulam Nuclear Power Project struggle committee with an iron hand as well as the immediate arrest of its convener, S. P. Udayakumar under the National Security Act, said district president Pon. Vijayaraghavan.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, he said that Mr. Udayakumar should call off the indefinite fast.

Terming his act of making use of fisherwomen as a shield at the fast venue as a cowardly behaviour, he demanded Mr. Udayakumar's immediate arrest under the National Security Act.

Seminar to create awareness

The Mahila Congress has decided to conduct a seminar on March 25 at Nagercoil to create awareness among the people of the safety measures which have been taken by the Cntral Government.

The experts committee appointed by both the Central and the State Governments had allayed fears about safety and other aspects in connection with the commissioning of KKNPP among the people living in and round the project site, he added.

He also thanked the Chief Minister Jayalailthaa for taking such a bold step regarding commissioning of the Kudunkulam plant as well as allotting Rs. 500 crore for implementing various welfare and development activities for the benefit of people living in and around the plant.

He appealed to the government to set up an industrial estate at Radhapuram in order to create employment opportunities for the unemployed youths. National leaders along with the State level leaders of the party would participate in the proposed awareness seminar at Nagercoil.

The district president of Mahila Congress, Susheela Stary, district general secretary, Indian National Trade Union Congress, N. P. Jeya Kumar, and others attended the meeting.
