Sandbags placed at the lake's outlet point removed

TAMBARAM: Miscreants late on Friday night removed sandbags which were placed at the `kalangal' (outlet point) to prevent water from flowing out of the Kilaambaakkam lake, near Vandalur.

On November 28, miscreants had used explosives to smash the outlet point. Sandbags were then placed to prevent the remaining water draining out of the lake.

Official sources said the aim of the saboteurs was to drain the lake so that the houses built inside could be occupied once again.

The lake was filled to the brim after the incessant rain in November. The incident has come as a rude shock to farmers who had just transplanted paddy crops in their fields. They fear that the gushing water from the storage point will submerge their fields and ruin the standing crop.

Balan, who has raised paddy on farms adjacent to the lake, said the community was happy after the recent heavy rain and was preparing their land for farming.

They were banking on the Kilambakkam lake water and were using it judiciously.

Apart from warnings of stringent action against encroachers, there was very little initiative from the Kancheepuram district administration, he alleged.

Officials, however, refuted the charge that nothing was being done.

They had undertaken an exercise to mark the extent of the lake. The process would be completed soon. The founder of Exnora International, M.B. Nirmal, said the incident again highlighted the need for special units to protect water bodies.
