TIRUCHI: A live workshop to demonstrate the latest advancement in the field of plastic surgery would be the highlight of the three-day annual conference of the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Association of Plastic Surgeons to be held here from January 6 to 8.
The workshop is to be held as a prelude to the conference to be attended by 150 plastic surgeons from various parts of the country, its president, T. Krishnamurthy, said addressing press persons on Tuesday.
It would give an opportunity for budding plastic surgeons to update themselves on the recent developments and learn more about a few plastic and cosmetic surgery problems. Eight different operations (two simultaneously) would be held at the Kaveri Medical Centre here on January 6.
Plastic surgery plays a major role in the treatment of congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palettes, disorders of genitals, mitten fingers and haemangioma.
Almost 80 per cent of the injuries caused by accidents and burns needed the attention of a plastic surgeon. Compound fractures, defects created during the treatment of cancer, nerve damages due to diabetes, gangrene, ulcers and defects caused by leprosy, could all be covered by plastic surgery.
Cosmetic surgery involved restoration of deformed body parts or concealment of scars that marred the different parts of the body.
Transplantation and implantation of lost or mutilated organs grafting tissues and reduction of obesity sucking out excess fat from the body are some of the recent improvements in the field.
